Atlas

Atlas is a young lurcher with a wonderful temperament and so many great qualities. He walks beautifully on the lead, isn’t fazed by loud noises, children, or other dogs of any size, and is a gentle giant. He’s also a dream in the car and takes treats ever so gently. Like a typical lurcher, he enjoys a good hour-long walk and then happily snoozes the rest of the day away. He’s not a jumper or climber and is quite content with a comfy dog bed—but he does love the sofa!

He has no hang-ups and is pretty perfect in every way. Atlas appreciates strokes and scratches and will stand staring at you until you oblige 😅 He is the most gentle soul. He likes to nest with toys, antlers, shoes, and the odd bit of clothing from the laundry pile—though he hasn’t chewed any shoes, he just likes to have them nearby. He had a good run at an enclosed field recently, which really brought out his smile 🥰

Atlas is also crate trained and will walk in on his own. He needed to put on a little weight, but that wasn’t a problem since he’s not fussy about food! He enjoys both kibble and raw meals, with a duck wing and rabbit ear treat for extra crunch. As he’s still settling in, he’s learning the ropes of home life. He is mostly house-trained but can have accidents sometimes if he doesn’t stick to a routine.

He’s a quick learner and already knows some basic commands such as ‘no’, ‘wait’, and ‘go’. He follows the resident dogs for guidance and has learned to wait for his food until given the signal. In an enclosed field, his recall is decent as he tends to stick with the ‘pack’. However, like many lurchers, if something catches his eye, he may choose to go off after it and return when he’s ready… He’d definitely benefit from continued recall training to help improve this!

Due to a previous badly healed fracture, Atlas has had a rear leg amputation while in rescue, and he is now a tripod dog! This doesn’t impact his quality of life whatsoever—you can see that in his pictures.

At around a year old, Atlas is playful, easygoing, and an all-around lovely boy who will make a fantastic companion. Ideally, he would be homed in a house with older dogs who can show him the ropes and don’t play too rough, as he only has three legs.
